Flores is abound with great forests. They range from lush, green mangrove forests in a healthy coastal ecosystem, bamboo forests (around Bena be admired Village) to vast areas of tropical rainforests. Florinese flora is well-known for its wild orchids, pines, mountain figs, red wood as well as edelweiss. Most Florinese forests also provide a good option to observe a huge variety of birds – with some rare endemic species – and listen to their orchestra-like singing. It goes without saying that binoculars are a very useful accessory for experiencing the spectacular Florinese forests.
Your forest exploration can be expanded with natural or cultural attractions. Some treks through the forests can be perfectly combined with a visit to a nearby traditional village; while others will lead you to wonderful waterfalls and hot springs, where you can have a relaxing rest. Be aware though, that some forest hikes lead through quite wild, unexploited areas. Therefore it is highly recommended for inexperienced hikers to do the exploration with a local guide who knows the terrain well.
