Around Ende

Ende district is known as the home of Kelimutu and where Indonesia’s 5 principles Pancasila is born. Ende City is the capital town of Ende and a starting point for all the cycling tours around Flores. Ende with its charming peninsula is situated towards Sawu Sea where you can stay a couple of days in the city, instead of just a quick stop before heading to Moni, Kelimutu or further to the east of Flores.

If you are looking for road cycling tours, start at KM0 sign near Marilonga soccer field and follow the main road in the direction to Bajawa to enjoy the beautiful sights towards Pulau Ende and Sawu Sea. The blue stone beach (locally known as Penggajawa Beach), just before Nangapanda, is the spot we are heading to. You can prepare lunch box in Ende to eat at blue stone beach or having lunch at Nangapanda in one of the warung along the main road with rice, fish and vegetables. One way cycling trip approximately takes 32km (less than 2 hours) from Ende and we recommend you avoiding the midday sun. On the way back, you will be rewarded with breathtaking sights towards the Bay of Ende, Mount Meja, Mount Iya and also Pulau Ende.

Other options for more challenging cycling tour is the trip to Wolotopo Village (20km, 3 hours) or toNdona, an ikat weaving village, or Manulando with steep uphill and downhill mixed with some off road cycling (around 17km).

If you wish to combine cycling and hiking around Ende, you can go to Mount Iya for a full day trip.

Last but not least, you can also try the off road cycling trip to the remote Poro Waterfall which is extremely challenging because of its road condition and steepness.

City tour is an option for a short cycling trip (about 12km, 1 hour). Start from your accommodation to Simpang Lima (roundabouts in front of H. Aroeboesman Airport), go to Jalan Kelimutu towards Potulando market where you can see the lively traditional market. Then go to Soekarno’s exile house and make a visit to the park Taman Renungan Soekarno where Indonesia’s 5 principlesPancasila is born. Continue to Ende Bay, and stop by at Mbongawani Market. You shall continue your cycling trip to the second harbour of Ende at Ipy Bay and Wolowona road market at the eastern part of the town, just after the Marilonga soccer field.
