Around Maumere
cycling around maumere-1

After cycling in the Kelimutu-Area, Oskar Ruch is on the bike again in Sikka District with the capital Maumere town which located at seaside with harbour, airport, good selection of restaurants, as well as a huge traditional market.

Cycling around Maumere is very relaxing because the cycling tour is close to the north coast and the roads are mainly flat. The heat and the humidity are the biggest challenge to cope by wearing hat and helmet and lots of drinks during the ride. Maumere town is a good base for the first couple of cycling tours because some are leading us into the west, such as; Gading Beach, Wailiti or Magepanda Beach. It is also worth to ride towards to Ende to visit after a moderate uphill ride of 6 kilometers and visit Bikon-Blewut Museum which exhibits various cultural and historical facts of Flores, well kept from missionaries.

Other cycling tour is go to the east towards Larantuka by passing Frans Seda Airport and a relaxing stay in one of the beach resorts and lodges in a distance of 10 to 35 km east of Maumere (Geliting, Waigete and Watumiti). You could combine your cycling trip with snorkelling and scuba-diving or simply just relaxing on the beach.

For a more challenging cycling tour, it is best to choose the area of Watumiti and Nangahale as your base. From there you can do daytrips to the area of the Egon Volcano and even combine your cycling tour with hiking up to the volcano crater. Furthermore to the east is also a nice challenging cycling trip in the mountainous region around Tuabao, Wolometang and Hikong.
